No, Ray Fisher Isn't Quitting As DC's Cyborg
For over a year now, Warner Bros' DC film universe has been plagued with the question of whether or not Ben Affleck would return as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves' Batman film, with rumors pointing to the actor leaving the role. That remains an open question, but a new rumor going around claimed another Justice League actor would depart DC's cinematic universe: Ray Fisher. Fortunately this rumor has been cleared up right away. Ray Fisher has confirmed that he isn't quitting as DC's big screen Cyborg, saying:
I don't usually engage the rumor-mill, but it's recent turn may be worth a little grist: I am NOT, nor do I have ANY intention of, leaving Cyborg. Furthermore, if/when the time comes for me to hangup my all-too-revealing mocap onesie, you will hear it from me directly. #BORGLIFE
There you have it, Ray Fisher is not quitting as Cyborg. It was cool of him to take to Twitter to address this rumor right away before it got out of hand. It's better to just nip it in the bud and move on. Fisher even included the hashtag "#BORGLIFE," seemingly letting fans know that he is all in on the character as long as there is a place for him in DC's films. And should anything change, he indicated he will be sure to let the fans know. So until that happens, there is no cause for concern.
The genesis of this rumor seems to have been less one specific thing and more a confluence of factors that people thought pointed to Cyborg and Ray Fisher's exit. For one thing, the Cyborg solo movie was initially scheduled for a 2020 release date, but given the various shakeups at DC and the fact that we haven't heard much on that film in a while, some people presume that it isn't going to happen. Also, it sounds like Cyborg originally had a bigger part in Justice League that may have set up his solo outing. Another factor is that the DC Universe streaming service series Doom Patrol recently cast Joivan Wade as Cyborg. That in and of itself is no big deal since DC's film and television universes are independent, but there is reason to believe that DC doesn't want to do as much double dipping in the film and TV universes, as evidenced by Arrow supposedly being no longer allowed to use Deathstroke.
You can see how some of this might lead people to believe that Ray Fisher's Cyborg is on his way out, but there is no real reason to think that yet, and we should take Ray Fisher at his word. Justice League actor Joe Morton has even suggested that some of the deleted Cyborg scenes from that film will contribute to the character's solo outing. Even if the Cyborg movie gets kicked down the road a ways or is cancelled entirely, that doesn't mean that the character will be gone from the DCEU. Plenty of MCU characters don't have solo films and still exist and prove a valuable part of that universe. Ray Fisher's Cyborg would be a great supporting player opposite someone like Flash.
The DCEU is still finding its footing and it's entirely possible that even it doesn't know exactly what the plan for Cyborg is yet. But until we hear otherwise, it looks like Ray Fisher is still your big screen Victor Stone.
