Wont You Be My Neighbors Director Reveals A Fantastic, Surprising Mr. Rogers Story That Got Cut

When the average adult hears the name Fred Rogers, they think of a peaceful man in a knit sweater, and perhaps even the jaunty piano-driven song that introduced his beloved children's show. Within pop culture, there are few more straight-and-narrow figures, and it's hard to imagine him doing anything even remotely "radical." That being said, I recently learned that he actually did just that while trying to bond with his teenage son, grooving to the tunes of free-spirited artists Frank Zappa and Bob Marley. Morgan Neville, director of the new documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor, recently told me:

His son, Jim, when he became a teenager, Fred was trying to stay in touch with his son, and he'd say, 'What are you listening to?' So Jim would give his dad mixtapes, and so he gave his dad a bunch of Frank Zappa. And his dad, who was a composer, thought it was very interesting, because Zappa's music was really out there. But Jim said, 'The music I gave my dad that he responded to the most was Bob Marley.' He loved Bob Marley. And if you think about it, the message of love, it's very on message for Fred Rogers.

I had the wonderful pleasure of sitting down with Morgan Neville last week during the Los Angles press day for Won't You Be My Neighbor -- and it was at the very end of my interview that I heard this funny story. Knowing I only had one question left, I asked the filmmaker about the great stories that he simply couldn't squeeze into the final cut of his documentary, and he offered the surprising way the always-working Fred Rogers connected with his son, Jim, at a young age.

For those not fully registering the contrasts here, for example, Fred Rogers was a deeply religious man with very conservative values, while Frank Zappa was a vocal iconoclast during the height of his popularity. All the same, Rogers was able to appreciate Zappa's work being a musician and a composer himself -- and Zappa certainly was incredibly experimental and groundbreaking throughout his career.

As for Bob Marley, one can definitely see Morgan Neville's perspective on the matter, and the comparisons between the message of the music and Fred Rogers' philosophy. Let's not forget that this was the artist that brought us songs like "One Love, "Positive Vibration, and "Satisfy My Soul." Where they surely did differ was on the matter of cannabis legislation, though Neville explained that Jim Rogers had a workaround in that situation:

He said, 'Of course, I didn't give him the ganja songs.'

This isn't one of the stories that is shared in Won't You Be My Neighbor, but there are probably hundreds more in the wonderful doc, and there's a good chance you'll cry while listening to a lot of them. The movie has been gaining buzz ever since its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, and soon you'll hopefully be able to see it for yourself. The doc is getting a limited release this weekend in major markets -- and if that includes you, I highly recommend purchasing a ticket.

Deadpool 2's Brianna Hildebrand Explains What Happened At The Test Screenings

Deadpool 2's Brianna Hildebrand Explains What Happened At The Test Screenings

Fans of Deadpool became concerned recently when reports from test screenings of Deadpool 2 claimed the movie had serious problems. Negasonic Teenage Warhead has now arrived to help everybody calm down. Brianna Hildebrand was recently asked about the reshoots for Deadpool 2 which seemed to be taking place immediately following rumors that audiences at test screenings didn't care for the upcoming sequel. According to her, the test screenings were fine, and the reshoots took place in order to add more of things the audiences liked, not change or remove things they didn't. According to Hildebrand...

No, it was nothing that had gone wrong. I think it's a common misconception too -- that people think that reshoots are to fix things that people didn't like. A lot of the time, reshoots are to add more of the things that people loved. [Filmmakers] watch their films again and are like "better fix that." I don't know how much I can say about that.

While it's certainly true that reshoots can be undertaken to fix negative criticism, Brianna Hildebrand is absolutely right that they can also be used to accentuate the positive. If there was a character or element that audiences really gravitated toward, things may change in order to give more screen time than was originally planned to that element.

It was last week when the reshoots on Deadpool 2 were confirmed via Josh Brolin amid rumors that the test screenings on the film had gone poorly. Information was sketchy, and most was second hand, as test audiences are required to stay quiet about their experiences, but the prevailing rumor was that Deadpool 2 had some problems. Of course, since we don't have any details beyond rumors, it's possible that the truth of the situation got a little lost in the translation. If it was felt that the movie needed more of something, one person could look at the lack of that something as a bad thing, while somebody else could focus on the fact that they liked that something, and just wanted to see more of it. It's possible that the characters of Cable and/or Domino turned out really well and viewers just wanted to see more of them and less of Deadpool himself.

Brianna Hildebrand told ScreenGeek that she didn't want to talk too much about reshoots because she knows people automatically assume the worst simply in bringing up the topic of reshoots, even though she says there's really nothing to worry about here. Hopefully, fans of the Merc with a Mouth can now relax a little bit. Reshoots are common practice and while they may very well have been things that audiences didn't love about the film, it doesn't mean that all hope is lost.

Deadpool 2 hits theaters May 18.

Brianna Hildebrand: Deadpool. It's been kind of action-packed. I would say half action-packed so far, anyway, for me. My character is not very longwinded. She's very short. Are you shooting today? Brianna Hildebrand: I'm not shooting today. But my last thing that I worked on was the day before yesterday. It was in the scrapyard.

Is Finn Using A Lightsaber Again In Episode IX?

Is Finn Using A Lightsaber Again In Episode IX?

Production on Star Wars Episode IX is currently underway and while we've heard a few rumors here and there about things that might happen in the film, we really have no idea what's in store for our favorite characters. However, John Boyega's recent response to a fan has people wondering if we might see his character Finn pick up a lightsaber again, as he did in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Here's the exchange.

The fan mentions his hopes to see Finn be a "badass hero" in Star Wars Episode IX, which includes seeing him holding a lightsaber once again. John Boyega responds with an affirmative statement, so perhaps this means we could see Boyega take hold of the Jedi weapon at some point.

Of course, Boyega could simply be responding to the part about Finn being a "badass hero" in Episode IX. Perhaps we'll see the character kick some ass and take some names in the new film, even without a lightsaber.

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens Finn in given the Skywalker lightsaber after Rey refuses to take it. He takes on a Stormtrooper with it and even takes on Kylo Ren himself, though it doesn't go well.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi Finn doesn't get to swing a lightsaber at any point, but I would take issue with the idea that Finn has not been a badass character previously. He does take on Captain Phasma one-on-one in that movie and he takes her down, complete with the "rebel scum" quip. He got to win a fight and say something cool at the same time. I'd say that's pretty badass.

Still, it does make the mind wander as to what exactly might be in store for Finn in Star Wars: Episode IX. Star Wars: The Last Jedi reunited him with Rey and the rest of what's left of the Resistance. The small band could fit entirely inside the Millennium Falcon.

It's difficult to guess what could be in store for Finn and the rest because we don't really know where the final film of the trilogy will start. While The Last Jedi opened immediately following the events of The Force Awakens that was an anomaly as far as Star Wars movies go. Usually, there are multi-year gaps between them, so if that happens here, any number of things could have transpired off-screen, starting Finn's journey in the film literally anywhere.

Maybe Rey has been training him to use the Force? While that's a longshot, it could explain why he ends up with a lightsaber, assuming that does, in fact, happen. We'll find out in December of 2019, unless a trailer lets us know first.
