Mark Hamill Defends Unexpectedly Controversial Star Wars Reunion Photo

Star Wars' Mark Hamill has not been quiet about wishing the new trilogy ending the Skywalker Saga included a reunion for his Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford's Han Solo, and Carrie Fisher's Princess/General Leia Organa. So it wasn't exactly surprising or controversial when he tweeted a fan-made image doctoring a shot from the first Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer, adding Han, Leia, and Luke next to Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. Hamill tagged that reunion photo with #MissedOpportunities:

However, the first comment under his tweet had this message:

You know this image comes from one of the alt-right portion of the fan base, right? Bad look sir.

Mark Hamill returned to Twitter to share a new version of the reunion photo, this time adding his Joker. He explained and defended his original post, but lightened the mood with some of his trademark dad humor in honor of Avengers: Endgame weekend:

Billy Dee Williams appreciated the Luke/Leia/Han/Lando reunion photo, and replied to Mark Hamill's tweet with his own light humor:

You should be used to getting everyones knickers in a twistpart of your charm man!

Most of Mark Hamill's replies have been supportive, with fans saying there was no need for him to have to defend himself. They understood he was just re-expressing his sadness at the "missed opportunities" of the final trilogy never having a full OG reunion. However, some commenters argued the source of what you retweet does matter -- especially if you are as influential as Mark Hamill -- since it may come across as support for the account that made it. Many other famous names, especially political figures, have been called out for such things in the past.

Mark Hamill wasn't trying to endorse anything other than more wishful thinking for What Could Have Been. He's been on that track for a while, even if the Disney suits would probably rather he drop it. What if this is all a long con and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker does give us some kind of Luke/Leia/Han reunion after all? Based on his many posts on the subject, it doesn't seem like that's the case, but you never know.

Mark Hamill even revealed he pitched an idea to director J.J. Abrams for Episode VII: The Force Awakens, bringing Luke Skywalker back into the story a little bit earlier in the film so he could reunite with Leia and they could all be there for Han Solo's goodbye. Now the character of Han is gone, and Carrie Fisher is gone in real life. Leia is still returning through previously unused footage, but the original trilogy reunion ship seems to have sailed.

At least we have Lando back in the mix for Episode IX, and the trailer showed him having a blast back in the pilot's seat. Of course, we can't forget Chewbacca -- even if this fan image didn't add him to the reunion. Chewie didn't get Leia's hug in The Force Awakens and he didn't get a place in this reunion photo. The Wookiee deserves better.

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters December 20. Here's what we know so far about the end of the saga.

A Wrinkle In Time Rate And Discuss With Spoilers

Across all of space and time, warriors will unite to partake in the long awaited adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time this weekend. The impressive-looking Ava DuVernay-directed Disney film is poised to take a run at unseating the previous box office champion known as Black Panther. But is it worthy of taking the crown? Well, that's one of many questions you, the audience, will have to consider, as it's time to rate and discuss this would-be blockbuster.

If the advanced critical reception is anything to go by, A Wrinkle In Time may not be the phantasmagorical blockbuster that furthers the charge Black Panther started. The film adaptation of Madeline L'Engle's famed children's book has already landed itself in the Rotten pile over at Rotten Tomatoes. Our own official review labeled the latest movie version of the story as follows:

Despite some sharp visuals and interesting ideas, A Wrinkle in Time ultimately tells a meandering story that fails to capture the magic of the source material.

That being said, there's a chance that casual moviegoers may enjoy A Wrinkle In Time more than the critical consensus indicates, and if you're one of those folks, you just might have some thoughts on the content in the film. With that in mind, look through the following discussion questions and share your answers at the bottom of this story.

Do you think A Wrinkle In Time developed the world well enough to continue adapting The Time Quintet, or is this more of a stand-alone success with a vague opening for a sequel? As a book fan, how well do you feel A Wrinkle In Time captured the novel's content? Is this truly an un-adaptable book? Can A Wrinkle In Time unseat Black Panther as the top film of the weekend?

With questions asked, it's now time to proceed to the rating portion of our evaluation of A Wrinkle In Time. On a scale of 0 to 5, let us know how much you enjoyed this movie with the poll below. Also, don't forget to share your rating, and your further thoughts of A Wrinkle In Time, in the comments at the bottom.

And last, but not least, before you head off into the multiverse, we have some further reading to suggest for you to enjoy after seeing A Wrinkle In Time. First, a sad bit of news for those of you who really wanted Ava DuVernay to set her directing eye towards the Star Wars universe, as she has emphatically announced she does not want the gig. At all. Also, we sat down with DuVernay and some of the cast of A Wrinkle In Time, and that lead to the director discussing how the process of adapting the book to film was a bit of a challenge for her. And if you're wondering how Oprah Winfrey herself ended up playing one of the mythic Mrs. at the center of the film, you can read her tale on how that happened as well.

That's all for this week's installment of Rate and Discuss. We'll see you all back here next week, and hope you enjoy A Wrinkle In Time!

One Funny Effect Thor: Ragnarok Had On Annihilation For Tessa Thompson

One Funny Effect Thor: Ragnarok Had On Annihilation For Tessa Thompson

Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok and Alex Garland's Annihilation are two films starring Tessa Thompson released in close proximity to one another, but they each demanded different skills from the talented young actress. While the former has her as an alcoholic fallen-warrior, her character in the latter is an introvert with a brilliant scientific mind. Interestingly, the extreme proximity of the two projects created a special little challenge for Thompson as she was making the features -- but she recently revealed to me that it also created a funny problem towards the end of Annihilation's production schedule:

The tricky thing was at the time when I was shooting Annihilation I was training for Thor, so that was also balancing the physicality - because I didn't want to get so strong while I was working on Josie... I didn't want to like have like these bulging muscles. And as soon as I wrapped Annihilation I started working on Thor two days later - I'm literally shooting one of my biggest scenes.

The subject of Tessa Thompson's crazy tight production schedule came up earlier this month when I had the pleasure of sitting down with her one-on-one during the Los Angeles press day for Annihilation. Discussing her character in the Alex Garland film, named Josie Radek, I pointed out that the personality was a change-up from what we've seen from her in past roles -- and that led her to talk about the interesting problem created by her two recent sci-fi movies being made so close to one another.

As noted, with the exception of two days of rest, Tessa Thompson went directly from the set of Annihilation to Thor: Ragnarok -- and helping absolutely nothing was the fact that the process involved flying from London, England to Brisbane, Australia. Because she's human, she was exhausted when she arrived on the set of Thor: Ragnarok, but it led to a funny interaction with her new co-star, Tom Hiddleston. She recounted,

Tom Hiddleston walks past me and he's like, 'Oh, how's it going?' And I was like, 'Ooof.' He's like, 'Don't worry, like even Judi Dench is off one day.' And I was like, 'Oh my God, did you just Dame me, man?!' That was great. That was one of the first times that I met Tom. But it all went okay.

"Okay" is honestly an understatement. Not only did Tessa Thompson wind up being a legitimate scene-stealer in Thor: Ragnarok, with fans clamoring to see a lot more of her in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Annihilation is phenomenal and reveals her fantastic range as a performer. She can catch up on rest now knowing that the work was worth it.

Funny enough, this is a big week for both Thor: Ragnarok and Annihilation -- and therefore for Tessa Thompson. Today marks the first day that the Taika Waititi movie is available for digital download, and the Alex Garland film hits theaters domestically this Friday. If you have time this week, I'd recommend both.

Earlier drafts of a third Captain America film, had Brock Rumlow, a.k.a. Crossbones, secretly working as a mercenary for the Red Skull (just like in the comics), but these ideas were scrapped and re-worked, when the filmmakers decided to follow the "Civil War" storyline.

Pixar movies undergo a lot of changes over the course of their development. In the case of Toy Story 4, nearly the entire movie underwent significant story changes. While these sorts of changes are always made in an attempt to make the overall movie better, sometimes story beats and even entire characters that the movie makers love end up getting cut out as a result.
