How Topher Grace Feels About Tom Hardys Venom

How Topher Grace Feels About Tom Hardys Venom

Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock a.k.a. Venom is now just weeks away from hitting theaters - but fans will long remember that the actor isn't the first to try and take on the part. Instead, that honor belongs to Topher Grace, who played Venom in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. That story admittedly doesn't have much of a happy ending, but at the very least Grace is as excited as anyone to see Hardy's upcoming performance:

To me --- I truly mean this --- I think Tom is the guy to play that role. I'm thrilled to watch it as a fan. I really mean that. I think he's just the best dude.

Topher Grace will be back on the big screen this weekend playing the extremely evil David Duke in Spike Lee's highly-anticipated and lauded BlacKkKlansman, and it was while speaking about the new movie with Inverse that the subject of Venom was raised. Grace was asked how he feels about Tom Hardy taking on the role that he once played - and clearly there is no ill-will on his part.

In case you don't remember too well, fans were not exactly enamored with Topher Grace's version of Eddie Brock/Venom - and that really started long before Spider-Man 3 hit theaters. The comic book character in question has always been drawn as bulky figure with huge muscles, and so from the very beginning fans were questioning Sam Raimi's decision to bring Grace on-board. The reality is that Raimi was trying to set up a mirror contrast between Eddie and Peter Parker, having the former come across as a "cooler" version of the latter, but things didn't exactly work out as planned.

According to reports, Sam Raimi's primary focus in the making of Spider-Man 3 was showcasing the villain Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), but he got pressured by the studio to include Venom as a character given his extreme popularity among comic book fans. This turned out to be a mistake, as the storyline still to this day feels very much jammed in and out of place in the finished film. Despite the blockbuster making a ton of money, ultimately it wound up killing the franchise, as Raimi's plans for Spider-Man 4 were nixed, and eventually Sony decided to reboot everything with the Amazing Spider-Man titles.

Everything with Spider-Man 3 went down over a decade ago, however, and now it's time to move on - specifically with a brand new cinematic version of Venom. The Ruben Fleischer-directed movie, which stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate and Michelle Lee in addition to Tom Hardy, arrives in theaters on October 5th - and we'll continue to have more and more in-depth coverage of the blockbuster as we get closer and closer to its upcoming release date.

Say Anything's Boombox Scene Almost Featured A Very Different Song

Say Anything's Boombox Scene Almost Featured A Very Different Song

It's become one of the most iconic shots in film history. Even if you've never seen Say Anything... you almost certainly know the moment. John Cusack with a boombox over his head as Peter Gabriel sings "In Your Eyes." However, it turns out that moment was almost quite different. Apparently, director Cameron Crowe originally wanted an entirely different artist to sing the song in that scene and Peter Gabriel only came into the picture after the first choice declined. Also, an entirely different song was actually used during filming. According to actress Ione Skye, who played Diane in the memorable scene...

Cameron Crowe really wanted Elvis Costello to do that song, and then he saw an early screening of it and didn't want to. And we were all really bummed out. But the Peter Gabriel song was later, so I don't think --I'm sure he played a great song at the time --and in my memory it was "In Your Eyes" when I was doing my scene, but it wasn't.

It's almost hard to imagine any voice other than that of Peter Gabriel in that famous scene, but it could have just as easily been the voice of Elvis Costello singing an entirely different song if the singer and decided to do it. For some reason, maybe he just didn't care for the film, he declined to contribute a song for Say Anything... Who knows if he feels any differently now. The scene is so famous that it's been copied and parodied numerous times in other films and on television. It's one of those moments that you recognize, even if you've never actually seen the movie the moment is based on.

The moment is iconic that even actress Ione Skye admits to Entertainment Weekly that she knows a different song was actually used when her part of the scene was filmed, but her memory is of "In Your Eyes" actually being played. The song is so infused with the scene that she even remembers things differently.

Not that Ione Skye had any idea at the time that this particular scene would become as famous as it did. She admits to not having a clue that the boombox moment would be the part of the movie that everybody remembers. If somehow you've been living under a rock since the 80s. Here's the moment under discussion.

Looking back on it, the moment in Say Anything... could have come off as more than a little creepy and stalker-like. However, as Ione Skye says, there's an earnestness to Cameron Crowe that comes through, and that's certainly the case here. Would it have sounded better with the voice of Elvis Costello? Who knows.

The scene struck me as very different from how I remembered it. I had thought Lloyd was standing on the street and Diane came to the window or something like that. Actually, she is just lying in bed and starts to hear "their song." Then it cuts to Lloyd standing in a park with a boombox over his head, clearly nowhere near her house.

One Hilarious Marvel Crossover Broken Lizard Wants For Super Troopers 3

One Hilarious Marvel Crossover Broken Lizard Wants For Super Troopers 3

These days, it is not uncommon to see franchises and properties cross over with one another. The Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced a brave new world of franchise melding, and it looks like other series want to get in on the action. In fact, during a recent interview with Broken Lizard to discuss the release of Super Troopers 2, CinemaBlend learned that the guys behind the comedy sequel want to get Chris Evans to bring Captain America to the world of the Vermont State Troopers. Broken Lizard told us:

Erik Stolhanske: We talked about Captain America today, right?Jay Chandrasekhar: Well we've talked about Super Troopers 3 being called Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers. Since Chris Evans is retiring as Captain America, and he already has the mustache.Erik Stolhanske: He'd be a perfect fit.Jay Chandrasekhar: Could be a nice crossover.

There's a clear undercurrent of sarcasm to these remarks, but it's hard not to be intrigued by the possibility of Captain America (or at least Chris Evans) showing up for a third movie. Elsewhere in our conversation with Broken Lizard, they similarly talked about doing a third Super Troopers movie in which they go after classic movie villains like Jack Nicholson's Joker and Star Wars' Jabba the Hutt, so there's a case to be made that they've thought about how far they can stretch the limits of reality in the Super Troopers franchise. Bringing Cap into the fray could be perfect; they would just need to watch their language around him.

It's also worth mentioning that Chris Evans actually could make for a solid addition to the roster for a potential Super Troopers sequel -- or Potfest, if that long-awaited Beerfest follow-up finally happens. Though Evans has spent the bulk of the last decade working in serious roles like Captain America, he also notably cut his teeth in lighthearted romps like Not Another Teen Movie, 2005's Fantastic Four, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. If he shaves that somber Nomad beard into a mustache, then he could conceivably slide right into the world created by Broken Lizard.

For now, we will have to see what happens with Super Troopers 2. The film is decidedly more grounded than anything that would feature Captain America, and it sees these fan-favorite fictional cops head to a contested stretch of the border between the United States and Canada to deliver their own brand of justice. The film took almost two decades to make it to the big screen (even using a Kickstarter campaign to generate a portion of its budget), but a successful theatrical run could go a long way towards getting development started on another Super Troopers movie.

Want a closer look at CinemaBlend's Super Troopers 2 chat with Broken Lizard? Then check out a clip from the interview, below!

Super Troopers 2 is now in theaters, so make sure to check out CinemaBlend's full review of the long-awaited comedy sequel before seeing it for yourself!
