Joel Edgerton Used His Tiny Role In Star Wars To Land Big Hollywood Meetings

Joel Edgerton Used His Tiny Role In Star Wars To Land Big Hollywood Meetings

For movie fans, Joel Edgerton is now a household name, but it wasn't always so. Once upon a time he was just a young, relatively unknown Australian actor before he landed the small part of Owen Lars in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. While that role was so small some of you may have forgot he was even in Star Wars, the actor was able to parlay it into getting big Hollywood meetings, as he explained:

Star Wars allowed me, in that 18-month period while they were putting the movie together, to bluff my way into any meeting I wanted. 'I'm in Star Wars. I'm not telling you that I'm only in it for five minutes and that I don't have a lightsaber.' I would have meetings with people, and let them believe I was a larger part of the story than I actually was. That was a good time and allowed me to get my first job out of the States.

He may have played Luke Skywalker's eventual foster parent, but given that level of hustle you would think that Joel Edgerton was really more suited to be hanging out in the Mos Eisley Cantina. People in Hollywood knew that he was cast in the next Star Wars prequel film, but given the film's level of secrecy, the size of the part was not public knowledge. So as far as most people knew, he had a huge role where he wielded a lightsaber.

Nobody in the industry wants to be late to the party on an up and coming actor who is about to have a breakout role in the biggest film on the calendar. Joel Edgerton knew that, and he smartly let people believe his role was bigger than it was. He chose not to reveal the blink and you miss it nature of his part, as he revealed to Total Film.

He presumably made a good enough impression during the meetings that it was no big deal, but it must have been somewhat jarring for the people in those meetings when the trailers for Attack of the Clones started hitting, and Joel Edgerton was nowhere to be seen. But at that point you've got to admire the actor's moxie.

Just having a part in Star Wars is a huge deal for anyone's career by itself, but Joel Edgerton clearly saw it as the kind of opportunity that you maximize to its fullest potential, likely giving himself a huge leg up as his career moved forward by getting his foot in the door to these kinds of meetings. And he is still forever a part of the Star Wars universe. Maybe he'll even show up again if we ever get a Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff film or TV series on Disney+.

Nowadays Joel Edgerton doesn't need to bluff his way into big Hollywood meetings by name-dropping Star Wars; he should be able to get in all on his own just off the strength of his name. From big films like Black Mass, The Great Gatsby and Red Sparrow to smaller films like Loving, Joel Edgerton is a recognizable name that has proved his chops.

Joel Edgerton has also proved that he is a filmmaker to watch behind the camera as well. After making his directorial debut with 2015's The Gift, Joel Edgerton returned this year with Boy Erased. The film is about gay conversion therapy and has received plenty of critical acclaim, including for Joel Edgerton, who both directed and adapted the screenplay for the film.

Boy Erased is now playing, but that's just one of the awards contenders in theaters this holiday season. Check out the others and the biggest blockbusters in our Holiday Movie Guide.

First Bumblebee Footage Shows How The Transformer Got His Name

First Bumblebee Footage Shows How The Transformer Got His Name

Ever since the Transformers franchise started, they have existed under the watchful eye of one director: Michael Bay. This has been very good for Paramount, which made a lot of money off of the robots in disguise, but not so great for fans, as Bay's bombastic vision has pummeled a lot of the potential in the Transformers stories. This year, we finally will get to see what another filmmaker does with the series when Travis Knight's Bumblebee reaches theaters, and the blockbuster gave us our first look at footage here in Las Vegas at CinemaCon.

Paramount showed off an entire scene from Travis Knight's film, a "prequel" of sorts that will be set in the 1980s and go a long way towards explaining why we should love Bumblebee in the first place. 'Bee is the yellow Transformer, who -- at the start of this film -- is in the form of a Volkswagen bug. The clip begins on Charlie, a new teenage character played by Hailee Steinfeld. The alarm blares, and she's up in the morning and brushing her teeth, using her Walkman to listen to "Bigmouth Strikes Again" by The Smiths. The tone reminded me a lot of the opening of Back to the Future. When Charlie turns her headphones off, though, the song continues to play... but out in her garage. It's Bumblebee. He's using the music to communicate with Charlie.

Charlie goes out to the garage and starts to inspect the car. Why she's unfamiliar with it has not been explained. But when Charlie, who exudes a bit of a tomboy vibe, gets under the car to investigate, she sees Bumblebee's face looking back at her... and the car begins to transform. The transformation, as handled by Travis Knight and his team, is slow and deliberate. We sense the weight of moving parts -- no surprise, given that Knight is the CEO of Laika Studios and specializes in stop-motion animation and models for films like Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings.

When Bumblebee is live-sized, he's shy. He can't communicate with Charlie, though she tries to figure out what his name might be. She decides to call him Bumblebee, because of the buzzes that he makes, and also the color of his paint scheme. It's a sweet scene, a tender scene. Words I haven't used in regards to the Transformers franchise yet.

As the panel for Bumblebee moved along, we saw additional footage of the action that's bound to come. This was described to us as a coming-of-age story for both Charlie and 'Bee, and it had that Amblin studio vibe of being nostalgic (shot on grainy film, for real warmth) and yet exciting. Evil forces eventually are going to try and come between Charlie and Bumblebee, and yes, there was a montage of what looked to be explosions and battle. There are even two other Transformers (at least) in the footage that we saw... possible villains.

But everything about Bumblebee, from what we saw, was on a smaller canvas than the Transformers movies have previous worked, and that's a good thing. If this movie can prove that story exists in the Transformers world, than new filmmakers can continue to step in and guide the franchise for years to come.

Bumblebee stars Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon and John Cena. It opens in theaters on December 21. Hopefully this footage will arrive online soon. Until then, bookmark our Movie Release Schedule for 2018 to see what else will be in theaters soon enough.

Netflix Continues Pushing Into Movie Space By Joining The MPAA

Netflix Continues Pushing Into Movie Space By Joining The MPAA

For the last several years, Netflix has been pushing out a slew of original content, first in the realm of TV and more recently in the realm of movies. Although there's been some push and pull between the subscription streaming service and movie theaters, Netflix is now at least joining the MPAA.

This is a big deal for several reasons. First, joining the Motion Picture Association of America is big given that Netflix and the movie industry as a whole have seemed at odds at various points over the past several years. It's also the first time a non-major movie studio has joined the MPAA.

The other big thing that the MPAA is responsible for is rating movies in the United States based on a G, PG, PG-13, R, or NC-17 scale. Currently, there seems to be no general consensus with how Netflix rates movies.

Sometimes Netflix rolls with the type of system that TV uses for all of its originals, movies included. So, if you look at a title like Chevy Chase and Richard Dreyfuss' The Last Laugh, you'll see it listed as something like TV-MA. If you look at a title like Bird Box, it's Rated R. It's all very weird and somewhat confusing. It could have to do with festival distribution, theatrical releases and purchased films versus films produced in house, but the average person using Netflix probably wouldn't know anything about that.

The report doesn't say if Netflix will be fully switching to an MPAA ratings format, but streamlining movies would make sense.

Given that the MPAA will be losing an entire source of revenue after Fox merges with Disney, adding Netflix should be a boon for the MPAA. Netflix's Ted Sarandos also notes the streaming service wants to join to keep the film industry in business.

Joining the Motion Picture Association further exemplifies our commitment to ensuring the vibrancy of these creative industries and the many talented people who work in them all over the world.

Currently talks are still underway with the streamer, and THR also reports that after the Fox and Disney deal goes through, the MPAA may also be courting other new members. Amazon is listed as another potential option to join.

Netflix recently cemented its place in awards ceremony consideration with Roma, the new movie from Alfonso Cuaron which has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards. Late in 2018, Netflix started to change its mind about releasing movies into theaters first, giving releases like Roma, Bird Box and the Ballad of Buster Scruggs windows in theaters.

Some theaters are still boycotting Netflix releases, however, preferring to run movies that have a 90-day window between theatrical and home releases.

For some Netflix movies, a big screen really isn't needed for viewing, but for others where cinematography or spectacle are more important, a theatrical release may prove helpful to fans. Now, as Netflix joins the MPAA, it will be just one step even closer to respectability within the movies landscape. In the meantime, take a look at what the streaming service has coming up.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and Sarandos are intent on upping the company's profile as a legitimate force in the movie business, and joining the MPAA will further that goal.
