Lightsaber Dueling Is An Official Sport In France

If you grew up with Star Wars you surely played at being a Jedi at one time or another. Whether you had an actual toy lightsaber, a knock-off plastic sword, or just a stick that you swung around and added sound effects to, you probably pretended to be the greatest Jedi in the galaxy far, far away. Now, you can actually put those skills to the test as lightsaber dueling is now an official competitive sport in France.

In an attempt to get more young people into fencing, the French Fencing Federation has officially given the lightsaber the same approval that traditional blades like the epee and foil have. Now lightsaber fencing clubs are being created throughout France and official lightsaber instructors are being trained to become your own personal Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The lightsabers are made of polycarbonate and are lit by LEDs. Some more expensive models also include chips that create sound effects so that the lightsaber even sounds like the real thing, and really, if it doesn't make the sound what is even the point?

Like traditional fencing, lightsaber dueling has officially sanctioned rules for the 15 point, 3-minute bouts. Check out some of them in the brief video below.

The decision to add lightsaber battles to traditional fencing comes from a desire to make young people in France more active. According to the AP, there's a feeling that French youth aren't participating in sports as much and so by combining traditional fencing with the pop culture status of Star Wars the hope is that young people will be willing to give the sport a try.

Sword fighting in movies has always helped post the popularity of fencing, but now people are more into Star Wars than Robin Hood, so it seems the sport needs to take its cues from the movies instead of the other way around.

If nothing else, this should make fencing battles fun to watch as the lit up lightsabers swing quickly back and forth in a dimly lit arena. Some fighters even take things a bit further by adding cosplay to the mix and actually dressing as Star Wars characters.

It will certainly be interesting to see if the lightsaber clubs ultimately succeed and make sword fighting more popular with a new generation. If it works, fencing groups in other countries could pick up the idea. Then, if it becomes popular enough a global scale, Olympic lightsabers battles are a real possibility. How cool would that be?

We're years away from such things ever happening, to be sure, but it's at least theoretically possible.

Why Wolverine Isnt In Dark Phoenix, According To Simon Kinberg

Although the X-Men are traditionally an ensemble-led property, theres no question that when it comes to the film franchise, Wolverine was the most prominent character. With the exception of Deadpool, Hugh Jackman played the clawed mutant in every X-Men-related movie from 2000 to 2017, officially retiring from the role in Logan.

However, since Dark Phoenix is marking the last of the Fox eras main X-Men movies, you might have wondered if Hugh Jackman will reprise Wolverine for a cameo, similar to his appearances in First Class and Apocalypse. Well, no such luck, and not just because Hugh Jackman hung up the adamantium claws. Heres what director Simon Kinberg had to say about Wolverines absence in Dark Phoenix:

If you know the Dark Phoenix story, youd want to really service the love story between Logan and Jean. And I think the notion of Hugh Jackman, as great as he looks for his age, and Sophie Turner it didnt sit well with me. Or anyone else!

Simon Kinberg makes a fair point. On the one hand, there was a love triangle between Cyclops, Jean Grey and Wolverine in the comics era when The Dark Phoenix Saga was published, and X-Men: The Last Stand continued exploring the latter twos romantic dynamic. Dark Phoenix eschewing that is a notable departure from the source material.

On the other hand, while theres only a four-year age difference between Hugh Jackman and original Jean Grey Famke Janssen, Jackman and Sophie Turner have nearly 30 years separating them. Granted, Wolverine is nearly two centuries old in the modern day X-Men universe, so age will always be an issue with any woman he gets romantically involved with, but since visually its more noticeable between Jackman and Turner, Kinberg and the creative team decided to set that element of the original story aside.

Additionally, Simon Kinberg told Rolling Stone that excluding Wolverine from Dark Phoenix came from not wanting to divert attention from the main character, as this movie revolves around Jean Greys corruption. Kinberg continued:

There was an element of this being Jeans story. And I was committing so fully to it that I didnt want to run the risk of pulling away from Jean by going to the well of a fan-favorite character in these movies. I wanted this to be a very different experience of seeing an X-Men movie.

At least we know that in this new timeline that Dark Phoenix and its predecessor take place in, Wolverine is still set to join the X-Men somewhere down the line, just like he did in the original timeline. But as far as Dark Phoenix goes, hes still doing his own thing nine years after Jean Grey, Cyclops and Nightcrawler freed him from William Strykers facility.

It also helps that Wolverines story was concluded in Logan, where (SPOILER ALERT) the character died in the year 2029 protecting his daughter and other young mutants being targeted by Transigen. Jackman made it clear after Logans release that he would not play Wolverine again, so even if Simon Kinberg and his team had wanted to include the character in Dark Phoenix, its highly unlikely the actor would have come back.
