Why It Was Crazy Hard Filming The Equalizer 2s Big Final Action Sequence

Like most action movies, The Equalizer 2 escalates its action to the point of a giant firefight in its third act... but the upcoming sequel has one thing that makes it special: the fact that the sequence is set during a raging hurricane. As you would expect, on the big screen it looks totally crazy, and when I recently sat down with director Antoine Fuqua and star Denzel Washington, they confirmed all of my suspicions:

The Los Angeles press day for The Equalizer 2 was held this past weekend, and it was appropriately at the end of my interview with the veteran actor-director duo that I asked about the movie's climactic battle. Antoine Fuqua noted that shooting the action was exactly as "not fun" as you'd expect, with Denzel Washington stressing that things definitely aren't made easier on the set of a film when things are all wet. His specific choice of word was "tedious," as they not only had the stress of doing multiple takes filming each scene, but everything was cranked up to 10 because of the uncomfortable wind and water effects making everything more difficult.

Without getting into too many details that might spoil the experience of actually watching The Equalizer 2, the pain and struggle filming the sequence legitimately does pay off -- as it legitimately looks like the last section of the movie was filmed during a serious Nor'easter. It makes for a thrilling and intense atmosphere, amping the stakes, and more importantly allows Denzel Washington's Robert McCall to effectively show off his crazy killing skills in a unique environment. It's definitely a whole lot different than the end of the first Equalizer, which you may remember concludes at the hardware superstore at which McCall worked (in the sequel the story picks up with him operating as a Lyft driver).

While it's usually not necessarily a great thing to be thinking about the filmmaking process while watching a movie, I will say that The Equalizer 2's finale is a bit of an exception. It's pretty crazy to see the cast of actors battling the elements while facing off in a life-or-death battle, but in the moment you also can't help but think about how they actually got the work done. Without seeing the behind-the-scenes footage, one can only imagine the scale of the sprinkler system and the size on the fans being used, and that image alone should put a smile on the face of any cinephile.

Fans of The Equalizer will soon be able to see the action for themselves. The Equalizer 2, which co-stars Pedro Pascal, Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman, Ashton Sanders, and more, arrives in theaters this Friday, July 20th. What's Going On With The Dune Movie, According To Denis Villeneuve

Following the release of Blade Runner 2049 last year, Denis Villeneuve is gearing up to once again dive back into the science fiction realm. However, instead of the rain-soaked noir landscape created by Ridley Scott, the Arrival director will instead make the jump to the Dune franchise for an adaptation of the beloved book of the same name. Dune fans have wondered about the status of the project for quite some time, and Villeneuve recently opened up in an interview at Cannes Film Festival to confirm that a script has been finished and he's getting to work on the first of multiple installments. Villeneuve explained:

Eric Roth wrote the first draft and I worked on my side afterward. I have not had such fun on the creative side since Incendies! My wish would have been to make both films at the same time but it will be too expensive. We will do them one at a time.

So, the script for the Dune adaptation has been completed, and Denis Villeneuve is now hard at work developing the project. The man behind Sicario has spoken passionately about his intentions for the project for quite some time (even drawing comparisons to the Star Wars franchise), and he has made slow and steady progress towards turning the project into a reality. Considering how much fun he claims to be having assembling the film, we may soon have another love letter to the sci-fi genre on our hands.

It also sounds like the director has his work cut out for him in terms of the sheer amount of material on his plate. In fact, elsewhere in his interview with La Presse at Cannes, it was confirmed that Denis Villeneuve plans to split the Dune source material and tell the story over the course of two movies. We have discussed this potential creative move in the past, and this affirms the fact that more than one Dune film is actually on the way -- though the director said he can't shoot them both simultaneously for financial reasons.

Dune is one of those properties that represents the benchmark for genuine sci-fi fandom. A novel series originally penned by Frank Herbert, the story centers on feuding houses of nobles on a futuristic planet Arrakis, with heavy thematic emphasis on ideas like environmentalism and gender roles. Dune was adapted to the big screen in 1984 when David Lynch's Dune debuted, but Denis Villeneuve has made it very clear that he wants to take the franchise in a new direction and properly adapt it based on his own unique vision for the property.

A sequel often means going bigger and bolder within a particular universe. That's precisely the case with The Incredibles franchise, which is going for something much more expansive with the release of Brad Bird's Incredibles 2. Part of that involves the casting of Chicago P.D. alum Sophia Bush as a brand-new superhero who joins the franchise's newly-bolstered ensemble, and the actress was apparently very excited to get in on the Pixar action. In fact, during a recent interview, Bush noted that she freaked out in a restaurant when she learned that she would be in the movie. The actress explained:

I was in public and I opened [the e-mail] and screamed really loud. I still have the PDF of it in my phone. [It had] The Incredibles family at the bottom and [it was on] Pixar letterhead. It's very official and sweet. I opened it and I screamed and an entire restaurant full of people turned and looked at me, which was mortifying, but just so exciting. Kind of an out of body experience. This is a big bucket list thing for me and it happened.

Talk about awesome mail. So, it turns out that Sophia Bush didn't get a phone call when she was hired for Incredibles 2. Instead, she received an Incredibles-themed email from Pixar telling her that she got the job, and according to her recent interview with HelloGiggles, she had a powerful reaction that caused her to scream so loud that the entire restaurant she was sitting in began to stare at her. Of course, given the amount of love that many Pixar fans have for anything and everything in the Incredibles world, it's easy to understand why she had such a fundamentally visceral reaction to being cast.

For those of you who have not kept up with Sophia Bush's casting in Incredibles 2, she voices a character named Voyd. Part of a brand-new generation of superheroes, Voyd has the ability to project portals that she can use to transport people and objects in the blink of an eye -- think the Portal video game series ramped up on steroids. Her character is a massive fan of Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), and something tells us that part of the character's excitement stemmed from Bush's own enthusiasm for the project.

Now it's a matter of waiting to see if there's a future for Voyd in Pixar's Incredibles universe. The Pixar sequel is already off to a great start at the box office, which means there seems to be audience enthusiasm for this franchise to continue. We don't have any concrete confirmation that Incredibles 3 is happening, but we would be willing to bet that Sophia Bush might want to come back if it eventually gets announced.
