Why The New Flash Directors Are The Perfect Choice

After a bumpy start, the DCEU is working to right the course and push ahead with a new slate of films. While Warner Bros. is keeping a lot of these upcoming projects and releases under wraps, we know the studio is hard at work getting Aquaman, Shazam!, Wonder Woman 2 and Flashpoint ready the big screen. In the case of the latter, it's been a long road despite the title character's tendency to make long roads irrelevant. The movie was pushed back a few times and lost two directors, but now Warner has signed on the duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, which might be the best duo to see the Scarlet Speedster to the finish line.

Like many blockbuster directors before them, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein do not have much experience with actual blockbusters. They primarily write comedy movies, haven written Horrible Bosses, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The duo only just directed their second feature film, the surprisingly good action-comedy, Game Night. With only two features under their belts, it's understandable that they seem a worrisome choice, but it's Game Night that gives this writer confidence that Daley and Goldstein are going to be just fine with The Flash.

Warner Bros. has clearly had a hard time figuring out exactly what it wants from a Flash movie. Originally, Seth Grahame-Smith was set direct but that partnership ended over "creative differences," though some reports claimed that Warner was ultimately gun shy about putting The Flash into the hands of a first-time director. Then the studio brought on Rick Famuyiwa, an indie director, to bring some auteur to the blockbuster but that, too, was soon shattered over those dreaded "creative differences."

It certainly didn't help matters that The Flash movie was then revealed to be adapting Flashpoint, a story about the Flash resetting the entire DC Universe. That's a huge story for just the first Flash movie, and it's not exactly a big show of faith for the state of the DCEU.

All the more interesting then that the directors ultimately chosen for a potentially universe-rebooting blockbuster are more experienced with low-budget comedies. A strange pick on the surface, but it says a lot about the relationship the two have with Warner that the studio feels it is the best pick for The Flash. It speaks to a level of trust and I'd be surprised if there were any differences of the creative sort between studio and director this time around.

So, Warner Bros. feels confident in its pick, but what about us, the common folk? What reason do we have to support John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein? Exhibit A: Game Night.

Starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, Game Night follows a group of couples who meet every week for their safe, boring game night, but things get turned up when a murder mystery becomes very real, and the couples aren't sure what's real and what's a game. It's an interesting idea, but there's really anything about it that immediately sticks out from all the other studio hybrid comedies. It's easy to initially lump Game Night in with these lazy and predictable comedies (think Daddy's Home). The difference with Game Night, though, is that it has John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

There is way more creativity going on in Game Night than the trailers would lead you to believe. It's full of these tiny flourishes and smart uses of the frame. One scene has a particular character seated so his head is fitted perfectly between two guns hanging in the background, for example. There's also a great opening logo cinematic that involves game pieces that helps set the mood (I'm a sucker for opening logos), as well as a brilliant use of model figurines to help ease into transitions. It's just a lot more effort and thought than you typically see in a studio comedy. It's not Edgar Wright-levels, but it's enough.

It should come as no surprise that the duo is able to wrangle the laughs with genuinely funny jokes, but what's equally important to The Flash is that the action is well shot. I won't spoil the specifics, but there's a fight scene in the first 20-30 minutes that is really impressively shot and choreographed. The fight seamlessly moves from room to room and gets surprisingly serious. The movie lives in a tough tonal spot between silly comedy and serious action, and Daley and Goldstein do a really nice job of balancing that. I don't mind saying it's not a perfect movie (there are some character plotlines that go nowhere), but it's an entertaining one.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have proven they've got the visual chops to handle the extremely visual action of Flashpoint, but Game Night isn't the only movie that the directors have in their filmography that gives them some edge. They're also one of the writing teams that contributed to the screenplay of Spider-Man: Homecoming. That movie had a lot of different writers, so it's tough to nail down what their exact contribution was, but they've still got that superhero experience. It also helps that with his humor and youth, The Flash is basically the Spider-Man of the DCEU. The two are already used to working with a fun superhero, so it's not some tragic tonal shift for them.

Obviously, it's still very early in the process, and though John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have signed a deal, there's always a chance they could end up splitting from Flashpoint. That would be a shame because now I'm more curious than ever to see what the two of them can do with the Scarlet Speedster.

While comic book movies are everywhere, 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise was largely ahead of the game. The Marvel mutants have been occupying the silver screen since the 2000 original, and the property is showing no signs of slowing down. Aside from the main franchise installments, there's also the Deadpool movies, and the upcoming superhero horror flick The New Mutants. Directed by Josh Boone, the film will follow a group of young superpowered kids, as they fight for survival in a shady facility. After the first trailer premiered, fans are eager to see more of the movie, which has been delayed over a year to facilitate reshoots and Fox's release schedule. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy will play Illyana Rasputin / Magik in the upcoming blockbuster, and recently revealed what the reshoots are focusing on.

I think we're making the movie that we set out to make, in the beginning. That's what we're going to end up delivering to people. It feels like the movie we all signed up to do, which is good.

Well, this is exciting. Despite a later release date and some reshoots, it appears that The New Mutants is working hard to deliver what it promised: a bonafide horror movie set in a comic book universe.

Anya Taylor-Joy's comments to Collider will likely be a relief for the X-Men fans out there. Because while the franchise preceded the MCU and DC universe, the results have been a bit of a mixed bag. Projects like Logan and Deadpool were appreciated by critics and comic book fans, but installments like X-Men: The Last Stand and Apocalypse prove that the X-Men franchise is a bit hit or miss. Now let's hope that The New Mutants doesn't end up becoming the latter.

Excitement about The New Mutants began before it even began filming, mostly due to its cast of familiar faces. Fans are eager to see Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, as well as Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton and Anya Taylor-Joy herself. And rather than a fun and scrappy tale of young X-Men, The New Mutants will follow as its superpowered protagonists struggle with their mental health, mutants abilities, and the forces that keep them trapped in the facility. This ain't Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters, that's for sure. So bring on the jump scared and unsettling imagery-- the fans are ready.

As far as Anya Taylor-Joy's Magik goes, there are definitely exciting places to take the character in the future. She's actually the sister of X-Man Colossus, who has become a bigger character thanks to his role in the Deadpool franchise. It should be interesting to see if the siblings ever get a chance to meet on the big screen. And with Fox and Disney's merger looming in the background, it's also possible that she could eventually show up in the MCU.

DC Now Has An Aquaman Spinoff In The Works

Aquaman was a gigantic commercial hit for DC Comics and Warner Bros, no question about it. Having collected over $1.1 billion worldwide, it is now the highest-grossing DC movie of all time, knocking 2012s The Dark Knight Rises off the #1 spot. With a performance like that, naturally theres been talk of making a sequel, but it also turns out that there is also a spinoff being worked on that will focus on the The Trench.

According to THR, Warner Bros has hired writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen a horror-tinged script about The Trench, with the tale set within The Trench kingdom. With James Wan, Jason Momoa and the rest of the main Aquaman team wanting to take their time on getting Aquaman 2 off the ground, evidently Warner Bros is keen on placing the spotlight on these amphibious monsters in the meantime, assuming it moves forward. The Trench spinoff would be much more modestly budgeted compared to Aquaman, and the main cast of the sixth DC Extended Universe movie would not appear. Wan and Aquaman producer Peter Safran are attached to produce.

The Trench are a relatively recent addition to the Aquaman mythos, with Geoff Johns introducing these creatures at the start of his New 52 run on the Aquaman comic book. In the main DC Comics continuity, The Trench reside at the bottom of the ocean, and it was later revealed that theyre the descendants of a group of inhabitants of Atlantis who survived the continents sinking centuries ago and evolved to survive their new environment, hence why they look so different from the modern day Atlanteans.

In the DCEU, The Trench are one of the seven tribes of Atlantis, and Arthur Curry and Mera fought off a swarm of the monsters during their search for Atlans trident. Arthurs mother, Atlanna, had also been sacrificed to The Trench years earlier for having a half-human, half-Atlantean son, although it was later revealed that she managed to avoid being devoured by them by escaping into a portal leading to The Hidden Sea.

It will be interesting to learn how this Trench movie is going to be handled. Because theyre animalistic, theres not that much substance to them. So either you tell an origin story revealing how The Trench came to be, or, and I suspect this is the likelier option given the horror tone the spinoff is going for, you follow a group of characters who are desperately trying not to be killed by The Trench. If the latter approach is taken, since apparently none of the main Aquaman cast will be featured, then who are the specific DC characters (who, lets not forget, need to be able to breathe underwater) you would bring in to star in the feature? One thing is certain, though: if handled correctly, this could be a terrifying movie within the superhero genre.
